English ‘cellist, Louise King migrated to Australia in 2003 and she specialises in performing contemporary classical, baroque music on an authentic instrument and chamber music and is a passionate and inspirational teacher. Her versatility and innovation is demonstrated by the extensive list of Australian and International groups, ensembles and orchestras who have invited her to collaborate on musical and educational projects. Her music making is daring and vibrant and she plays with a stylish freshness and breath-taking versatility.
Louise is guest ‘cellist with the Australian Chamber Orchestra, contemporary music groups Topology and Mercury Ensemble, Southern Cross Soloists, Sirius Baroque Ensemble-Sydney and The Queensland Orchestra. She is a member of Carisma, Tulipwood String Quartet and is Principal ‘cello in the innovative Deep Blue Concept Orchestra and the Queensland Pops Orchestra. She is regularly invited to be Principal ‘cello for Canticum, 4MBS ‘Festival of Classics’ Orchestras, Queensland Bach Society and the Queensland Choir.
She coaches the Baroque Ensemble at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music, Brisbane and gives lecture demonstrations in ‘extended contemporary techniques’ and collaborates with Australian composers to write new and innovative multi-media works for her instrument, the most recent being “CONFLUENCE” - a multi-media work for improvised solo ‘cello, CD and dancers commissioned for the opening of artist Christine Maudy’s 2005 exhibition at the Caloundra Regional Art Gallery.
Louise was born in Lincolnshire, England in 1975 and at twelve, won a Wolfson Foundation scholarship to attend the Junior Department of the Royal College of Music, London studying with William Bruce and subsequently with Leonid Gorokhov and Emma Ferrand. |

Upon graduating with high honours and every chamber music prize from the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester in 1997, Louise performed with the UK’s finest chamber orchestras such as the Northern Sinfonia, Manchester Camerata, Northern Chamber Orchestra, New London Soloists Orchestra and the Goldberg Ensemble and taught chamber music at the Junior Department of the Royal Northern College of Music, Manchester from 1998-2001.
Louise performed and toured the UK extensively with the King Piano Trio for three years under the auspices of the “Live Music Now!” scheme founded by Lord Yehudi Menuhin and was awarded scholarships from the Musician’s Benevolent Fund to attend the International Musician’s Seminar, Prussia Cove studying with Ralph Kirschbaum and Steven Isserlis, the Britten-Pears School at Aldeburgh U.K to study with William Pleeth and Dartington International Summer School with Karine Georgian. |
She has performed in international master classes given by world renowned ‘cellists such as Christopher Bunting, Anner Byslma and Christophe Coin and received coaching from the Amadeus, Fitzwilliam, Chillingirian, Vermeer and Lindsay String Quartets.
As a chamber musician and solo artist, Louise has been invited to perform at many international music festivals such as the Lake District, Dartington, International ‘Cello Festival (UK) and since her move to Australia, New England Bach Festival, Barrossa (SA), Bangalow (NSW), Sandgate (Qld) and 4mbs Festival of Classics, Brisbane.
As a symphonic orchestral musician, Louise has worked with the Hong Kong Philharmonic, BBC Philharmonic, BBC Symphony, BBC Concert, Royal Philharmonic, English Northern Philharmonia and Halle orchestras (UK). |
